Behind The Scenes: How I Design Cinematic, Magazine-worthy Shoots for My Clients

Updated: Aug 14, 2023

If you've ever wondered what a shoot with me is like, you're in the right place! By the time you've read the Haydens' story, you'll see how truly unique my client experience is; I don't know any other photographers who combine creative direction, fashion, and photography this way.

A few months ago, Stephanie told me she feels like her family is in their golden age, and she wanted photos to memorialize it. They hadn't had photos in more than five years (and never any they were thrilled with). They're adventurous, athletic, and build each other up whatever the chaos.

STEP 1 - CONSULTATION

Stephanie and I got together and started talking about locations, aesthetics, and colors, looking for a setup that would tell their story well.

We were talking about a cottagey, earthy feel at the national forest when I said... "This may not resonate with you and that's fine, but what do you think about gowns on the beach?" We went back and forth, but ultimately couldn't pass up the chance to go full send fancy! Stephanie mentioned the idea of them running through the tide together in their formalwear and I KNEW we had a winning concept. So off I went to start wardrobe and concept planning!

STEP 2 - CREATIVE PROPOSAL

My dreamer heart absolutely loves this part. Every client receives a custom proposal complete with their own color palette, storyboard, and full wardrobe planning; including shoppable links that fit your body and budget. Truly a labor of love!

The effort is worth it because it completely removes the headache of planning outfits for my clients, and the end result is so cohesive -- they know they're getting high end art.

Here a few snapshots of the Haydens' proposal:

The mood board page helps clients visualize the colors, story flow, and overall feeling they'll see in their own photos.

Each of these wardrobe boards come with interactive links, so all my client has to do is tap and shop the item (or grab a similar item out of their closet). I vet the vendors and check materials and sizes available before sourcing (and I always look for great sales!).

For clients, that means no stressing on color schemes, who matches who, or wondering if what you've put together will photograph well. Just a tap! Easy peasy. Stephanie shopped almost every item their family wore from these inspo boards.

We tweaked several iterations along the way; and by the time shoot day arrived, everything was in place and stress free!

STEP 3 - SHOOT DAY

I was concerned about stormy weather forecasts, but apparently prayed a little too hard for good weather; we arrived at our beach location to total sun with no clouds in sight! The lighting was actually quite harsh because I had planned the timing around cloudy skies; however, *many* hours of editing later, this masterpiece of a gallery came together beautifully.

I delivered well over 200 photos, but here are a few favorites of mine! I absolutely love how their look came together (and how no gowns or suits could keep this family from doing backflips, cheer stunts, and races along the beach, haha!).

What do you think; was all the planning worth it? (Correct answer: YES.) Their family will love these forever!
